So many good bad movies came out of the 80's and The Golden Child is a... golden example. This was also during the time that Eddie Murphy was at the top of his game. TGC can't be taken too seriously nor should a lot of movies Murphy did at the time.

It's just plain fun, or a guilty pleasure if you will. There is just enough story to keep you interested and Murphy serves up his signature comedy and wit throughout. If your a fan of his work in the 80's or movies like Big Trouble in Little China check out The Golden Child, you will not be disappointed.
