Review of The Gold Rush (1925) by Luiserghio M — 20 Nov 2011
I was fairly shocked to hear Chaplin's voiceover and realized then that I was watching the 1942 "revision" (which apparently also cuts a final kiss between the lone prospector/tramp and Georgia Hale -- who had lost favour by 1942).
At any rate, even though it is Charlie's voice, it kind of destroyed the atmosphere of the film for me (with a blow by blow narration instead of inter-titles). The Alaskan setting is an awesome place for a film, but this felt like just a string of gags and I didn't laugh as much as I have at other Chaplin films and they didn't have as much ingenuity as Keaton typically puts into his gags (the teetering cabin gets closest).
