Review of The Gold Rush (1925) by Cody Y — 22 Jul 2012
4: I think I'll have to disagree with Chaplin on this one. This time I watched his 1942 re-release in which there are no intertitles and Chaplin provides voiceover narration throughout the picture.
He considered this the definitive version, but the original 1925 version is superior in my book. Basically, it is much more laugh-out-loud funny. I think I've finally come to the realization that I prefer Keaton to Chaplin.
Chaplin may be more politically conscious and more of a perfectionist, but Keaton is just funnier. The Gold Rush is still a masterpiece though and it looks quite good on Blu-ray as well.
