Review of The Gold Rush (1925) by Erik B — 07 Mar 2014
I think movie buffs these days are so spoiled thanks to the Criterion Collection. Seriously, if you went back very recently in time and said to someone "Hey, I just watched the original 1925 version of The Gold Rush... You know, the one Chaplin spent much of his life trying to destroy", you would probably be looked at as.
A) A Liar.
B) A TIME TRAVELER WHAT ARE YOU.
Seriously, I can go on for hours about how insane it is that this film is even available to the public and how it's history is fascinating to the point of obsession. But what's even more shocking is how well the film actually lives up to it's reputation. Certainly not my favorite Chaplin film, it's a toss up between City Lights and Modern Times, but it's easy to fall for the film's melancholy hilarity. Great stuff.
