Review of The Godfather Part III (1990) by Maymay A — 01 Nov 2010
Not 100% as the others? That's right. Sofia Coppola screwes up the masterpiece? Right, she's one of the reasons. This third one ruins what would have been an impecable sequel? No. The movie is still great.
Al Pacino and Andy García both give an incredible performance (maybe Pacino wins) in a movie that finishes one of the best trilogies of cinema history (Lord Of The Rings might win because the three of them keep almost the same level, but obviously the first two Godfathers are better than any LOTR). Al Pacino's last crying scene will be remembered by every great cinemaniac.
Quentin Tarantino might have been very influenced by Part III while making his great 2009 basterd movie (and we can celebrate then, as the pupil surpassed the master: Inglorious Basterds > Godfather III). But I'm sure he didn't like that much her ex-girlfriend's job (Sofia Coppola) in the film. She'd better stick to her directing job, and brings us other great piece of art such as Lost In Translation.
Francis Ford Coppola gave us a great story, he apported a lot to cinema history. Watching this masterful story's end is like leaving something very special in your life. I wish there was place for a fourth part. But thereisn't. Francis Ford Coppola still has time, he could use Andy Garcia as the Godfather (which wouldn't be the same level, as Garcia is great, but not compared to Marlon Brando or Al Pacino) and use one of those great actors of this generation (Please, Not Shia Lebouef) as the possible sucesor. That would be great, wouldn't it? But we can't force a script like that, we must let it flow, and I think we're done with the third part. So let's face it, the Godfather is gone. How sad.
Aren't I exagerating? It's just a movie, isn't it? Yes, I'm talking that way on purpose, I'm just trying to pay tribute to probably two of the best films ever (Godfather 1 and 2) and to other great film (Godfather 3).
