Review of The Godfather Part III (1990) by Kip H — 06 Jul 2011
I find Godfather III a sad testament to the debilitating effects of super-stardom on the actors, writer/directors, maybe even the material itself. The intensity, suspense, and sheer weight present in the first two films is nowhere to be found and GFIII watches like a second rate TV crime drama.
The situations are contrived, the references to the first two films unnecessary, groping for the greatness that used to be. The relation between Michael and Kay is an unbelievable facade to get the two star actors together (had the writers never met a divorced couple?).
Feelings that were palpable in the first film are narrated by characters in stilted dialogue. The presence of Sofia Coppola in a role she is unsuited to play is the nail in the coffin of this film.
