Review of The Godfather Part III (1990) by Kenneth B — 26 Jun 2012
I have two problems with The Godfather Part 3. Sofia's acting (who doesn't have a problem with her performance) and the lack of Robert Duvall. Its a shame in a way but despite what the detractors say it is still an impressive film in which Pacino is puts in one of his finer post-hiatus performances and Andy Garcia oozes charisma.
The main problem is that the first two films were so good and they were made in a completely different time. In the seventies Coppola made Godfather 1 and 2, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now, in the 90's he made 'Jack', amongst others that I probably haven't seen.
The truth is that Godfather 3 is a more than competent piece of cinema and really does a better job of making us feel some emotion, not necessarily empathy, for a man who has done unforgivable things than, say, Raging Bull.
It will be forever in the shadow of the first to films but The Godfather: Part 3 is a film that is undeserving of the criticism it has received.
