Review of The Godfather Part III (1990) by Mloy X — 01 Dec 2013
Michael: "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.".
Just a little too repetitive for me: basically it's the first and second Godfather films combined into one movie. The same basic characters, with the same basic story and the same themes. With that said, however, I did enjoy the ending and I must admit, I didn't see that one coming. Overall, I heard most fans of the trilogy pan the third film, so I set my expectations extra low, but as it turns out, I actually kind of enjoyed this movie. Yes, it wasn't as brilliant as the original (seldom a sequel ever is) but it also wasn't as horrible as most people made it out to be. However, I do agree with most fans about Sophia Coppola's casting-- in the immortal words of Julia Robert's Pretty Woman character: "Big mistake! Huge!" Coppola acted as poorly as she directs and with a little less heart. The rest of the cast was naturally awesome, most especially the always adorable and undeniably talented Eli Wallach (who played Don Altobello), he's performances are always memorable and he's such a naturally charismatic scene stealer. I've never been a fan of Andy Garcia (Vincent Mancini) but he was kind of cool in this movie. Bridget Fonda (Grace Hamilton) and George Hamilton (B.J. Barrison) were an unexpected surprise, I think they were good but strange addition to the cast. Overall, the movie didn't suck and kind of a good way to wrap up the story of the Corleones.
