Review of The Godfather Part III (1990) by Daniel V — 30 Dec 2013
Ages better than you would think but still not even close to the masterpiece the first two are. Pacino gives a valiant effort here but Michael Corleone deserved a bit better send off. No more ripping on Sophia Coppola, the girl gave it a shot, her father deserves the blame for this performance.
He said so himself and he is correct. She is an amazing director so maybe this was the shove in that direction she needed. Either way, it's not her fault. Andy Garcia is the one bright spot in the supporting cast which sorely missed Robert Duvall.
They should've paid him whatever he wanted. My guess, he would've earned this a 4 star rating with his eyes closed. It does however feature one of the most powerful moments in the entire trilogy.
The moment Michael realizes that every choice he has made since becoming the head of the family, everything he has done for the family, every one of those choices has led him to lose absolutely everything.
It is a heartbreaking moment and so wonderfully shot and acted, it almost saves this wasted opportunity. Almost.
