Review of The Godfather Part III (1990) by Luca D — 19 Jun 2015
The Godfather Part 3 is a movie I feel didn't need to happen. The second Godfather had the perfect ending, it was tragic, emotional and fantastic. The Godfather 3 came out 16 years after the second film and boy does it show.
Now this isn't an awful film but it is unfortunately a very mediocre and bland movie. This film does have good in it though. The acting is for the most part very good. Al Pacino and Diane Keaton return, as does the actor playing Michael Corleones right hand man who SPOILER ALERT killed Fredo at the end of the second movie.
We also get Andy Garcia and Sofia Coppola who since this movie has become a famous director. Al Pacino is great unfortunately though he looks so tired and in all honesty like he doesn't want to be here.
Andy Garcia is fantastic, he's the most charismatic character and like able character in the whole film. Sofia Coppola unfortunately though is very wooden, she delivers her lines like she really doesn't care.
Her character is also really annoying and you don't care about her, in her defense though she isn't awful she's just bad and sticks out like a sore thumb. The direction is good, but when compared to how fantastically directed the first two are the direction here feels very flat.
The cinematography is good and the music is of course amazing. Unfortunately though this film has a lot of bad in it. My biggest problem with this film is it is so boring. This is actually the shortest of the trilogy but it feels like it's about 4 hours instead of 3.
The first two films moved, they weren't extremely fast paced but I was never bored watching them, due to the brilliant narrative structure, however while the ending 20-30 minutes of this film is really good the other 2 and a bit hours are ridiculously boring.
Before the ending of this film there were only 3 qenuinley great scenes, the rest are just boring talks about the Vatican that are hard to sit through. While he finale of the film is good it has nothing on the finales of the original two movies, especially the second one.
This film also feels really unnecessary, nothing that happens in this film was essential for us to see. There is literally no point in this movie, since this film was released Paramount have apparently admitted that this film was made just to make money.
One of my problems with this film was also some of the brief flashbacks they used of Michaels wedding which felt really out of place. The party scene at the start is also really hard to sit through, when the most important part that happens is a man gets bit on the ear you know it's a bad scene.
Also there is no Robert Duvall which is a huge shame. Overall the Godfather Part 3 fails to live up to the brilliance that is the original two godfather films. Boring, overlong and very unimportant. The godfather part 3 is a very unnecessary movie that is very hard to sit through.
C+.
