Review of The Godfather Part III (1990) by Damjan R — 02 Feb 2014

If many felt Part II was not really necessary (despite being great), I think there isn't anyone who thinks Part III was truly necessary and the work done in it reflects that sentiment. Al Pacino is on autopilot, the menace and darkness is gone and has been replaced with regret and shame, but the story around that transformation is just boring and plays like a rehash of the major moments from the first two films.

Apart from Pacino, who is phoning it in here, no other cast member can carry the weight of the story and it shows. Coppola, who I love very much, doesn't offer anything apart from a scene here and there and mostly focuses on showing how passionless he is about this project, despite what he might say.

The power simply isn't there & some scenes are just painful to watch (most of them involve Sofia Coppola & Joe Mantegna). To be avoided.
