Review of The Godfather Part III (1990) by Noah M — 06 Mar 2015
The Godfather Part 3 is a comedown from the first two. While the first two were amost entirely engaging, this one lost me at a couple of points. The movie tells you way more than you care to know about the Vatican bank and pope.
It's almost tiresome at times. Some of the dialogue could have been improved, you can tell that the film was having problems writing the script as they shot it. The performances are mostly very good, Pacino is as great as the first two, and Andy Garcia as the son of Michael's brother was a welcome addition.
However, the desicion to cast an untalented actress to act alongside some great actors was a poor choice. Sophia Coppola is bald, uninteresting, and even ruins some of the dramatic scenes. There are some very intense and well executed scenes, including some memorable assassination attempts on the good and bad side.
The conclusion does drag a bit, but does leave you satisfied and wraps up everything. Overall, Part 3 fails to reach the heights of the first two, but Pacino is great and his character continues to be a well written and interesting one.
The Godfather, Part III gets 3/5 stars (B-).
