Review of The Godfather Part II (1974) by Huseyn B — 17 Oct 2012
In the second series of "The Godfather", the American director Francis Ford Coppola did seem impossible. Taking unused, cut off as a result of rigorous selection plot lines of the novel by Mario Puzo, he developed the principles of an epic family saga. And the story aptly compared the adoption of the new Don Michael Corleone, who in 50 years to subdue all the spheres of influence in New York and even went out on the international scene, with a number of flashback scenes of a young Vito Corleone, an immigrant from Italy, to take the early XX century its way to the "bottom of life." The same griffitovsky parallel installation, which was used in the first part, here used for the collision of different ages, which allows more detailed and deeper analysis of the origins of the Mafia, the conditions of its origin, the principles of existence and the mechanism of the society.
While the events of the novel and the film completely invented, Coppola creates an authentic historical epic about the Mafia, right divining the essence of this "build-up", "cancer" on the body of the state. He reveals how to engage people in the sphere of influence of a criminal syndicate, philosophy and ethics of the power of those who are at the head of a gangster organization. Measured, it is an epic breath of the second series, thoroughness and scope of the story made some fans of the dashing prefer the first part. But it seems that the director was right, not wanting to exploit the mechanical success of his former militants, investing in a new story to greater charge sociality and critical reception of American reality.
A triumphant after all is forgiven. And the audience, and critics enthusiastically greeted the picture, although the attendance was still two and a half times less than the first part, and of the six awards "Oscar", including - for the film, director and Robert De Niro for the role of "godfather" in his youth, it never got a top performer Al Pacino. Meanwhile, in the second series he already embodies a certain skill solo actor complex internal drama of Michael Corleone, who was forced to become a "new Don" after the death of his father.
