Review of The Godfather Part II (1974) by Spencer J — 29 Jun 2014
Less lavish display of mafia mechanics, more epoch-centred, event cinema, The Godfather Part II is a different beast entirely to its predecessor. Coppola builds blissfully upon the thematic foundations of the first film, giving us the characters we know and love growing and changing in gorgeous, glamorous gangster-vision; almost a foreshadow to the likes of Scorsese and the modern giants of the genre.
Robert De Niro's portrayal of a young Vito Corleone is frighteningly fantastic and the film as a whole is by far the meatiest layer to Coppola's Godfather sandwich. But, the question is, does that make it the best? Either way, this is must-see cinema.
