Review of The Godfather Part II (1974) by Dann M — 22 Jul 2014
Surpassing the original, The Godfather Part II is a masterpiece that's extraordinarily compelling. Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo continue the Godfather saga by telling the concurrent stories of Vito Corleone's founding of the Corleone crime family in early 1900s, and his son's expansion of the family in the 1950s.
The film is remarkably effective at drawing parallels and continuing themes throughout the two stories. Additionally, both Al Pacino and Robert De Niro give outstanding performances; especial De Niro, who does an incredible job at mirroring Brando's portrayal of Vito Corleone.
Coppola's directing is also amazing, as it draws the audience into the film and makes it an experience. And, complementing the captivating visual style is a magnificent score from composer Nino Rota, who taps into the soul of the material.
The Godfather Part II is a rich, textured film that connects with its audience on an emotional level.
