Review of The Godfather Part II (1974) by Darrell T — 27 Jan 2015
Nominated for 11 Academy Awards & winning 6, including Best Picture, Best Director for Francis Ford Coppola & Best Supporting Actor for Robert DeNiro, The Godfather Part II is considered the greatest sequel of all time and some critics & fans think it even surpasses the original film.
Led by Al Pacino in his Oscar nominated role for Best Actor as Michael Corleone as the New Godfather, this film continues the saga of the Corleone family. At nearly 3 & a half hours long, like the 1st film, it never let's UO and seems to fly by.
Flashback scenes throughout the movie of a young Vito Andolini being exiled from Corleone, Italy to the United States in 1901 and being given the name Vito Corleone, shows how he became a devoted husband & father amd ultimately Godfather as played in the early 20th century by Robert DeNiro.
Supporting actors Michael V. Gazzo & Lee Strassberg were also nominated for Oscars as was supporting actress Talia Shire. John Cazale is excellent as heartbroken & eventually doomed Fredo Corleone. Cazale has the distinction of having every film he appeared in (6) be nominated for Best Film Academy Awards, including all 3 Godfather films...he appeared in flashback scenes in GF III. He had already died from cancer by the time it was released.
