Review of The Gleaners and I (2000) by Donovan D — 11 Feb 2008
Wonderful documentary by master-filmmaker Agnes Varda. Varda depicts how the practice of gleaning has been transformed as a result of late capitalism thanks to wasteful production methods and a constant need for 'the new'.
The film of course is slanted towards the political Left, but unlike many essay films and documentaries that ingratiate socialist ideologies with its viewers, Varda puts forward her case for the resilience of the poor in the face of capitalism most strongly by SHOWING how they have overcome hardships to survive.
There are times where she brings herself into the narrative, and in some ways its fitting even if she does go on tangents that detract slightly from the film; this is a documentary, and I can see the links between documentary and gleaning.
In spite of its occasional flaws, this is an important documentary by one of the greatest of filmmakers, and a fascinating look at a way of life.
