Review of The Gleaners and I (2000) by Bill B — 31 Jan 2009
A social-critique/personal dialogue that gives in intriguing insight into the french gleaning/picking culture while comparing it to the gleaner-like quality of a filmmaker's life. It's a mish-mash of culture and film that is new and insightful. Society is so wasteful, but even out of the wastefulness of others, many people find the products to sustaining their life, and one videographer finds a story.
Agnès herself is a very child-like character who finds joy in sharing with her audience the little nuances that make her who she is. This gives further insight into the lives of gleaners, since it's not only about other gleaners, but an autobiography of one too.
