Review of The Glass Castle (2017) by Josè M — 25 May 2018
Whatever tender and poignant moments there might be, in flashbacks to the early years of this grossly dysfunctional family, they can't compensate for the sickening deterioration of the father and inability of the daughter to confront what her life has been.
I don't find Woody Harrelson especially convincing or sympathetic in the role of the alcoholic and neglectful dad, but even more so I find his character so revolting that I just couldn't continue watching this grind of one infuriating scene after another.
Letting your children starve for three days, then taking a few dollars from the small stash in a box to go out on a drinking binge, oblivious to the plight of the kids-that may have dose of reality that some can relate to, but I just find it insufferable.
The mother is, in her own way, even more deplorable in her obliviousness and lack of concern for her children. This wacko pair makes watching the gritty reality of a dysfunctional family not so much heart-wrenching as galling.
I know such people exist, but I don't find it enlightening or moving to watch their warped behavior ad nauseam.
