Review of The Giver (2014) by Phillip D — 25 Dec 2015
It's truly stunning just how much potential was lost in this film. An able bodied cast combined with a powerful story and a moving visual landscape would seem to provide all of the tools needed to forge this film into the competent dystopian commentary that Divergent, The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner all failed to be.
Instead, Noyce and his writers turn in one of the all time underachievers in film history. The Giver has atrocious dialogue, cookiecutter props, bland costuming and criminally poor use of its established stars.
Add in a ham handed cameo from Taylor Swift and another brutally awful performance from Meryl Streep (who might represent one of the most rapid declines in acting ability in the history of film) and The Giver becomes tragically painful to endure.
What might hurt even more than watching it however, is the thought of what could have been.
