Review of The Giver (2014) by David D — 19 May 2015
Based on a book that is among the most frequent targets of Right wing book banners and that is included on the required reading list of many secondary schools, this is an excellent dystopian SF film. Based on a YA novel but not in any way a juvenile story or production.
The production design isn't flamboyant but it is visually impressive. The direction and acting are both very good. The story bears comparison to Fahrenheit 451 but with a different twist and a degree of ambiguity that the Ray Bradbury novel did not have.
Well worth seeing.
