Review of The Giver (2014) by Emer L — 25 Jun 2016
I walked into this a few minutes into the film and had a hard time leaving. This seemed like one of the easiest/most lightweight dystopia movies I've seen in a long time, but maybe that's just because there have been so many by now.
There were a few plot holes and you pretty much have to throw your suspension of disbelief out the window. The acting by Odeya seemed really bad. One could reasonably make the argument that that was part of her character--maybe I just didn't like the movie and premise so much that it blinded me.
Reading back on the plot I missed, even less of the plot makes sense now. Why and how?! I figured it just didn't make sense because more was explained at the beginning. NOPE. It feels really cheap when they basically just flash inspirational posters on screen to show the good of humanity in the past.
Game of Thrones does this right. The Giver fails.
