Even though the young adult dystopian adventure genre has been somewhat overworked in recent years, "The Giver" does a respectable job of delivering the goods. Despite its occasional tendencies to drag some things out and underexplain others, it nevertheless serves up a thought-provoking story with capable performances and inventive cinematography.
