Review of The Girlfriend Experience (2009) by Sarah R — 02 Aug 2009
How to phrase the main problem with this movie...Basically the film feels exactly like it's main character: cold, distanced, and it is whatever you want it to be. While this makes for quite an interesting artistic statement, there is little here to be interested in.
Every third line of dialogue is about the economy, the rest is trite and obviously improvised. The only character with any emotion, the boyfriend, brightens up the film whenever he's on, but everyone else is either seen for so little time we don't get invested at all, or like Grey they're so completely cut off and emotionally numb that we can't really feel for them either.
And sure, that's probably the whole point, which is why I say it's an interesting artistic statement, but not an enjoyable film.
