Review of The Girlfriend Experience (2009) by Matthew S — 23 Feb 2010
Soderbergh's always been an experimental filmmaker, and I think he even does it when he's making his big "Hollywood" stuff (what are the Ocean's movies anyway except big-name heist comedies shot in very interesting lighting situations?), and THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE is definitely experimental in a variety of ways. I'm still processing it, but first thoughts are:
1) Sasha Grey would make a fine non-XXX actress if she wanted to make the switch.
2) Soderbergh hasn't made a movie this disjointed since SCHIZOPOLIS, which is one of my favorites of his.
3) These are indeed trying economic times.
There's probably a lot more I could say about this, and probably should, but that may come later. See this if you're interested, but if you hate Soderbergh, stear clear.
