Review of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) by Allan C — 29 Dec 2012
Disappointing American remake of the original Swedish film adaptation of the Stieg Larsson novel. It's a stylishly directed and terrific on atmosphere, but the film seems to stridently reserved when it should be exciting or engrossing, but it ends up being a thriller with no thrills.
By no means is it a bad film, but outside of Mara Rooney as Lisbeth Salander, the film lacks the edge of the original film and book. It really needed more intrigue and suspense. If I'd felt the immediacy of the mystery or some sense of urgency about what they are trying to uncover, I might have liked the film a lot more.
Still, it's better than most films of it's ilk, and I did like that they tried something new for the ending, but it was definitely a missed opportunity for a great thriller on the order of "Silence of the Lambs.
