Review of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) by Jason U — 31 Mar 2013
This movie is truly rare, in that it betters the material it adapts. Stieg Larson's book is fantastically compelling, yet flawed. The script and direction for the film recognize all the places Larson could have kept his story more realistic and his characters more likable. Furthermore, Noomi Rapace's portrayal of central character Lisbeth Salander may be the most engaging I've ever seen on the screen. Every note perfect. Meanwhile, the less heralded Michael Nyqvist brings a realism to his role that is foreign (pun intended) to most American movies. Nothing about his performance is showy.
This, in short, is one of the best flicks I've ever seen. It will intrigue you, sicken you, make you laugh and make you cheer.
