Review of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) by Frankenstein S — 31 Oct 2007
Watched this anime movie a couple of times already in these two days... Conclusion: i'll give it 94 points (one point less than Mushishi only)!!! It's fregging amazing!
PLOT.
I've never seen an anime movie with such a creative and touching plot, while all the same time remains logical, fluent, natural and aviod being emotion-inflamming. It's far better than even Hayao Miyazaki's works (which in my opinion are all too unatural and inflamming).
VISUAL.
Visually, the anime reamins consistant with it dramatic atmosphere, drawn in a natural, solid and soothing style without exaggerated effects. But in terms of the movement dynamics, you can see the skills of the animators. The flow of the fabarics, hair, limb movement, every motion is expressed accurately and in touching details.
BACKGROUND.
The background, although not as eye-popping as "5cm per second", are still absolutely stunning - but without taking away attention from the actualy plot, which is unlike 5cm per second. In the latter I basically forgot what is happening in the story because I just got absolutely absorbed by the background arts.
CHARACTER DESIGN.
The character design, as the others, are natural and soothing. Like falsehair said, the protagonist actually looks a bit tom-boylish (which I like). There're no crazy hair style or alien-sized eyes. But you will still love the characters nonetheless~.
SEIYU.
What a seuju Makoto has... Her voice is not that stereotyping, high-pitched, pessimisive female voice, but a very open and care-free tomboy voice. Her voice gave the story much liveliness and reality.
I'll DEFINATELY recommand it to everyone, especially those who keep watching those Korean and Taiwan drama and never savored the true quality of Japanese production.
