Review of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) by Dave M — 03 Oct 2010
A sweet movie that finds it difficult to break new ground with a thoroughly explored premise, but still gets crazy good for a short period of time. I was rather disappointed by the animation here, particularly the lack of detail in faraway shots, but I suppose I've been spoiled by watching the best of the best.
(Really, it's like playing Final Fantasy XIII and then complaining that everything else is ugly). Conversely, the English dub was a welcome treat, and none of the voices were really lacking. Like I mentioned, movies about time travel rarely surprise, as essentially every possible twist has been covered before.
Though this movie is no different, it approaches the meaning of one's actions and the ease in which we make mistakes when granted power in a fascinating way. Plus it has juvenile and misguided passion, but passion nonetheless.
Rather reminiscent of a Makoto Shinkai movie, but with slightly more structure, and about twenty thousand more endings.
