Review of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (1997) by Jessica W — 23 Jan 2010
Great, touching movie.. with a rage-inducing ending. The ending isn't awful - it's just so ambiguous that it made me want to pull my hair out. After laughing, smiling and crying along with this film for an hour and a half, I feel we deserve a more concise, more logical conclusion than that.
And anyone who's seen it will know exactly which scene I'm talking about. A sweet and beautiful one, but written with confusing intent that doesn't fit logically into what we know about the world and its time(s). It's the kind of ending that disappoints because it was so, so close to being beautiful and moving - and instead becomes sentimental and disorienting. I feel it's a cruel way to end such an uplifting, well-constructed film.
So that's why it's a 4/5. Otherwise it would've been a 5 from me. Because I really don't know if I can watch it again, knowing that the end will leave me without the answer I want most.
