Review of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (1997) by Jon T — 24 Jan 2010
Have you ever wished you could leap back and forth through time and undo something embarrassing? That's what the title character of Mamoru Hosoda's gorgeously animated feature finds herself doing, especially when she almost gets into a tragic accident.
What seems like a lighthearted, trippy modern-day fantasy gradually evolves into something very emotional as it also delves into her relationships with two boys and the troubles her "time-leaps" cause.
It's a very clever and refreshingly original feature which is funny, witty, and sometimes heartbreaking. Think of this film as a bit of WHISPER OF THE HEART mixed in with a dash of TRON, and you'll get a pretty good idea about what to expect with THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME.
All told, a modern-day instant classic for fans of great stories and sumptuous animation. The folks at Ocean Studios also provide an outstanding dub, carried by a delightfully buoyant vocal performance by the lead actress.
