It definitely helps to have read the books, or seen the previous movies. First time viewers would likely be lost with the myriad characters and lack of explanations, for example, for Niedermann's immunity to pain.
Still, it's a stylish, faithful adaptation of the book, although the book seems to have raced, while the movie, at times, plods. Noomi Rapace is excellent as Lisbeth. I'm sure the Hollywood version will be flashier, faster-moving, but will last that je ne sais quoi this movie has.
