Review of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (2009) by Marc G — 20 Apr 2011
Slow Motion Picture.
The grand finale of this series moves with the speed of a turtle overstuffed with carrots, or whatever turtles eat. In it, Lisbeth Salander is finally vindicated of whatever mischief she does to men because she (and her mother) were abused by men.
In this way, Lisbeth emerges as a Christ figure for women. She takes in all the sins of the world inflicted on women by men, and absolves them of any misandric hatred of men by proving that it's all true. Her father, her shrink, her legal guardian - all violate this 80 pound lesbian dwarf goth (see it - I'm not making this up!)and NOW SHE'S GONNA MAKE 'EM PAY. The journalist Mikael - a man who really helps her (the now dead author), selfishly or selflessly (you decide) - is thanked at the end of the film with a word or two she spits out - then she slams the door on him.
I quite liked the first film -I tried overlooking the obvious misandry that animated the plot and characters - but the second was dire and this last one plumbs new depths. Naoomi Rapace is still the best thing in it (and I mean thing, because she is not a human I recognize).
The worst crime committed by the film, besides it's dullness, is the ultimate stupidity of the plot - intricate yet pointless. So her father, a Soviet agent defecting was protected by the secret service, which had her committed. God - that took 3 novels of over 600 pages and three films of well over 6 hours. Other than Noomi, abysmal acting and directing and terrible dialog.
Thank God that's over!
