Review of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (2009) by Rob W — 23 May 2011
Lets face it this is essentially 'Girl Who Played With Fire' Pt. 2, no matter how you tart it up parts 2 & 3 of the 'Millennium Trilogy' are two halves of one story. Whilst '... Dragon Tattoo' was a barnstorming mostly standalone film, '...Fire' lacked a conclusion and '... Nest' is an attempt to tie up all the loose ends.
At 2hr. 28mins this is easily 30 minutes to long, huge chunks of this could have been cut back or cut altogether and I found the overall conspiracy didn't warrant the amount of attention it was given.
What worked fine on page has not translated to the screen, the edge that Salander had in '...Tattoo' is gone and as with '...Fire' the biggest mistake is keeping Salander and Blomkvist apart for the entire running time.
Individual elements work but the overall film just doesn't jell, which is a shame as what promised to be one of the great cinema trilogies will simply be known as another franchise suffering from the law of diminishing returns.
