Review of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (2009) by Sujan S — 27 Apr 2012
Hmmm well this trilogy began with a bang. Dragon Tattoo was very good, accomplished film-making. Enough to make me decry the American remake before it was even made. The truth is that Fire and Hornet's nest just aren't up to the same level.
Fire's main problem is that is was intended as a TV film so it feels very televisual but also it just wasn't as interesting as the story in Dragon Tattoo. Hornet's Nest had been planned as TV film too but it does at least feel more cinematic than Fire.
It is paced quite modestly for the first hour or so and only really gets going during the courtroom scenes. As such it doesn't really justify an investment of 2 and a half hours from its audience.
The first film was almost incendiary, the two follow ups are distinctly pedestrian and although they are competent they lack any of the character interaction or the compelling nature of the first part.
