Review of The Girl on the Train (2016) by Sharron R — 15 Oct 2016
This was a tough one to rate. Overall, I liked the movie, but scene by scene, it was not nearly as fun as reading the train wreck that is Rachel Watson in the book, or the slow unraveling of Anna and Megan's perfect lives.
I am most upset that the director turned this into a soft-porn movie, which took so much away from the thriller aspect of the story - scenes that weren't even in the book. And the one sex "scene" in the book was completely omitted, which really would have given depth the Rachel's self-loathing.
The psychiatrist was nothing like the man in the book, which was a pity, because he was a memorable character. I was also quite disappointed that the movie takes place in the New York suburbs, rather those garden homes outside of London, a setting the author had so perfectly immersed me in.
So I suppose my final opinion is, sure, it's worth a see, but don't expect to be blown away.
