Review of The Girl on the Train (2016) by Ryan_Parkinson — 06 Oct 2016
Less Gone Girl, more Fifty Shades of Grey x Before I Go To Sleep.
What could have been an intensely thrilling film with absorbing character studies ends up hitting with about as much impact as a daytime movie. It's difficult to objectively evaluate it's quality, because its may parts all function to various degrees.
The cast all do stellar work, but the writing and directing never draw enough tension or dread to get you really invested. The film is all shot frustratingly close, never allowing visual character dynamics to shine through and all but eliminating the subtlety of body language. The finale omits a small pop as opposed to the BANG it could have been.
If you wanted to see this film, see it. If you weren't interested by the promotional material, skip it.
