Review of The Girl on the Train (2016) by Ariel W — 30 Jan 2018
This movie remains largely unseen and unheard as most comments from people and critics are entirely missing the point of the film. Foremost, we have a movie exploring the broad range of complexities that exist inside people, inside women (as we explore these characters the most).
Rage, pain, loss, etc. -- and this all shows us what these feelings manifest into. The "mystery" of the plot is secondary. Primarily, what all the characters are experiencing in this film is a beautiful study.
A beautiful act of compassion and understanding. Not to mention, a nauseating clear-cut glimpse into abuse, control, and manipulation. "It was out of self-defense" still rings in my ears. We see what it means to lose a baby.
What it means when one partner can't move on but the other does. What kind of sadness can exist inside of us, fears that hold us back from making a family and a joyful life. There is so much more to this film.
Look deeper, and closer. Thank you for sharing these women's stories through the magic of film: We need more.
