Review of The Girl on the Train (2016) by David B — 12 Oct 2016
Others have already said this but The Girl on the Train really is poor quality version of the vastly superior Gone Girl with nothing to make it stand out from other whodunit thrillers.
The film follows Rachel (Emily Blunt) as she tries to uncover the death of a young woman she has become obsessed with whilst watching her out of the window of her train. There's no real reason given why she's become obsessed with this woman, you just have accept that she does.
As the film develops, pretty much every character is rather unconvincingly thrown in as a suspect through the form of muddled flashbacks, including random man on the train. Unfortunately, this acts as nothing put a poor attempt at smoke and mirrors and actually brings attention to the guilty party rather then divert it away from them.
The only redeeming quality for the film are the performances from the cast. All of the main cast put in strong performances, in particular Emily Blunt who does give a convincing portrayal of a woman who's life is spiralling out of control. Unfortunately, this isn't enough to save this snail paced thriller from becoming a rather predictable snooze fest.
