Review of The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018) by David G — 12 Nov 2018

Claire Foy gives an intense, take no prisoners completely kick ass performance as Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl in The Spider's Web. Her skillful characterization and her ability to communicate raw, palpable emotion with just a single look is absolutely incredible. This American/Swedish Crime Thriller is adapted from David Lagercrantz's novel and is actually a sequel to David Fincher's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.".

When I saw this film I wasnt aware of that fact so this review will examine Spider's Webb on its own merits as I think every viewer should do when they see it.

IMO it not only stands on its own it is a very taunt, suspenseful thriller in its own right. It provides all the thrills and chills of a strong spy/crime drama and the tortured past of protagonist Lisbeth gives the film an emotional heart that Claire Foy deftly embodies to perfection. Screenwriter Steven Knight's well crafted script gives us a glimpse into Lisbeth's childhood that provides some very poignant layers that cause this film to rise above the level of just a typical crime thriller. That is coupled with director Fede' Alverez's methodical pacing, some very well choreographed fight scenes, dazzling stunts and some awesome spy tech that could bring out the adolescent James Bond fan in practically anyone.

Because Alverez chose to approach the film as a character driven narrative the pacing is varied and there are a few moments here and there where you get a chance to take a breath from the action. In these moments Claire Foy shines as she shows us the emotional toll these predicaments are taking on her character. The supporting cast is also excellent. Yes this is an international spy/crime thriller by nature. But it's well grounded in family relationships and ultimately the emotion surrounding these dynamics gives the film a much more human flavor. I highly recommend it.
