Review of The Gingerbread Man (1998) by Sarah P — 12 Jan 2008
Not entirely sure what to make of this one. It's fairly atmospheric, and Branagh puts in a fine performance. Robert Duvall is utterly wasted though, and Robert Downey Jr is just poor. It's well directed; Altman shows a flair for southern gothic, reportedly taking Charles Laughton's Night of the Hunter as inspiration.
The main problem is that it is just so predictable. Grisham's works seem to be fairly formulaic, so it's a shame that such a talented cast and crew couldn't have poured their efforts into something with a little more depth.
