Review of The Gift (2015) by Matthew C — 04 Aug 2016
Great direction and performances transcend this familiar, overly-nice-creepy-guy-from-past-wedges-himself-in-couple's-life plot. Both Joel Edgerton (who also directs) and Jason Bateman do terrific work balancing their affable, cordial personas with their darker, mysterious, more intense selves.
A few mostly surprising twists and turns ultimately take the thriller in some truly disturbing directions and leave the audience aghast and troubled. This is a film that superbly builds suspense and takes the audience for a ride as they discover.
