Review of The Gift (2015) by Ginak — 22 Aug 2015
We went out of our way to see this film and it was well worth it. What was most amazing to me was how long the character of Gordo stayed with me after the film was over, both as someone very scary and very pathetic.
I guess Joel Edgerton knew which one was the best role, although I wonder if he could have pulled off the quiet arrogance and menace of Simon (Jason Bateman), which creeps up on you. Rebecca Hall was also very fine and reminded me of a more contemporary play on Mia Farrow’s threatened housewife with an ambitious and self-serving husband in Rosemary’s Baby, although I think The Gift is far more insidious and subtler in its way than Polanski’s horror classic.
