Despite excelling at melodramatic tension, the film falls short in developing rich characters and evenly pacing the drama throughout. Despite these flaws, Joel Edgerton succeeded in creating an emotional rollercoaster whose slow building plot and devastating ending parallels its closest inspiration: Chan-wook Park's superior 2003 Oldboy.
