Review of The Gift (2000) by Luke P — 05 Dec 2007
Sam Raimi's last film before he made the Spider-man trilogy is a genuinely creepy thriller, with a superb leading performance from Cate Blanchett. Equally impressive when playing a majestic leader or a down-trodden single mum, she is fast becoming a true great of cinema.
The rest of the cast is impressive too. Keanu Reeves, usually stiff as an ironing board, is highly impressive as a rough wife beater, while he is supported by Greg Kinnear, Hilary Swank, Giovanni Ribisi, Katie Holmes (and her breasts!) and Raimi regular J.
K. Simmons. The film is beautifully shot, Raimi being a director who always has a firm grasp on the visuals, and it has a palpable air of uneasiness throughout. It does over-rely on loud noises and horror cliches occasionally, but otherwise it is a fine supernaturally-charged thriller.
Well worth a watch.
