Review of The Gift (2000) by Ray D — 03 Feb 2008
Interesting Southern Gothic directed by Sam Raimi (who should do less Spiderman and more thrillers) and written by Billy Bob Thornton (the character Cate Blanchett plays is apparently inspired by his mother?).
The film is basically the trials and tribulations ofa woman who has the power to see visions of things that have actually happened, and tells fortunes for money, getting tangled up in the dark side of her community when a debutante played by Katie Holmes is murdered.
Apart from Mz. Holmes and Blanchett, the film has a pretty strong ensemble cast, including J.K. Simmons, Greg Kinnear, Hillary Swank, and Keanu Reeves playing against type as a bearded thuggish type. Strong performances and a good atmosphere make it worth watching even if the ending is a bit of a letdown.
