Review of The Gift (2000) by David M — 04 Sep 2009
The Gift is a very straight-forward thriller about a woman's supernatural talents in a murder investigation.
Cate Blanchett proves that she is a reputable actress. I really do believe she can play anything. She is so versatile, there are several amazing close ups in this film where her expressions are always subtly chaning. The rest of the big names held their own but this was all about Cate Blanchett.
Which was also a hindrance. No one else was developed at all except her and Buddy which is disappointing but it's a thriller and extra characters are there to have the right number of possible subjects.
I don't think The Gift is an apt title as her ESP isn't in-your face all the time, it's not about how amazing her 'gift' is at all, thankfully because too much suprernatural would make the cynic in me very skeptical and I wouldn't be able to focus on anything else. The last Buddy bit was too much.
It's a decent thriller, watch it for Cate Blanchett if nothing else.
