Review of The Gift (2000) by Sharon P — 22 Sep 2010
This works on so many levels. When Keanu is playing average Joe Shmoe and evil redneck, he's brilliant. Some of Cate Blanchet's finest work. And what a score for Sam Raimi. I thought that car looked familiar.
Plenty of scary moments, but very touching character work as well. The chemistry that Ms Blanchet has with the actors playing her children and with Giovanni Ribisi is palpable. The only thing that weighs this movie down is Katie Holmes.
I can't figure her out. In movies that she's in that I don't like, I like her; however, in movies she's in that I do like, I don't like her. When she gets around more talented people she tries to push what she doesn't have.
And I hate that cause I do like her. The story is a little predictable, but the vision and the direction of this film were just.......fun. This is a very fun movie and one I will definitely watch a few more times.
