Review of The Gift (2000) by Dan H — 23 Sep 2015
A very good film. For me, the standout was Giovanni Ribisi as the kind hearted but unstable Buddy, who all but becomes the beating heart of the film by the end. Cate Blanchett and Keanu Reeves also put on good performances, with Keanu playing a role far different from the ones he normally plays.
The Gift has a few unnecessary jump scares, it meanders around for the first hour or so, and it's structurally all over the place and pretty muddied but the character work is fine, the acting is good, and it's very stylistic.
While I had a feeling who the killer was right from the first scene he appeared in, the film does a good enough guessing game that I wasn't quite sure I was right or not until the final few moments.
The Gift is not the best mystery/thriller but it's still a fun and interesting one.
