Review of The Giant Mechanical Man (2012) by Dwight W — 01 Oct 2012
It's not a movie everyone will "get"...especially not those with overly conventional mindsets and traditional film expectations, but for people who can think and feel outside of convention, this is a great movie. Those who think the film is overly "indie" or quirky must really be looking hard. It played pretty real to me and despite the intentional caricature performance from Topher Grace, the romantic storyline remained tight and endearing. The final full scene of the film couldn't have been better IMO and actually has the feel, resonance and emotion to become one of those iconic resolution scenes like Bogey and Bergman's tarmac farewell scene in Casablanca. Fischer's character expresses more with a single exhalation of breath than all of her lines combined in that scene...it's very moving and powerful.
I stumbled across this film and was surprised to like it so much. It kind of depicts a more age appropriate "Lost in Translation" sort of relationship and it works on nearly every level for me.
